Male Fertility: Myths and Realities

Debunking Beliefs and Supporting Men’s Reproductive Health

When we talk about fertility, the focus often falls solely on women. However, male fertility is just as important and can also present challenges that deserve attention, understanding, and treatment.

In this blog, we aim to debunk some of the most common myths about male fertility and share the facts that every couple should know when trying to conceive.

Myth 1: "Infertility is only a female issue"

Reality:Infertility affects both men and women. In fact, about 40% of infertility cases are related to male factors. This includes problems such as low sperm count, poor motility, or abnormal sperm shape.

Myth 2: "If a man ejaculates, he’s fertile"

Reality:Ejaculation does not guarantee fertility. Semen may contain an insufficient number of sperm or sperm with poor quality, which makes successful fertilization more difficult.

Myth 3: "Age doesn’t affect male fertility"

Reality:Although men can produce sperm throughout most of their lives, sperm quality decreases with age. After the age of 40, changes in sperm DNA become more common, which can lower the chances of pregnancy and increase the risk of genetic abnormalities in the embryo.

Myth 4: "There’s no solution for male fertility problems"

Reality:Today, there are many treatments and assisted reproductive technologies that can help achieve pregnancy even in complex cases. From lifestyle changes and medical treatments to procedures like in vitro fertilization with ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), solutions are available.

Myth 5: "Stress, alcohol, or smoking don’t affect male fertility"

Reality:Lifestyle has a direct impact on reproductive health. Smoking, excessive alcohol, being overweight, stress, and poor diet can negatively affect sperm production and quality.

What can men do to protect their fertility?
  • Schedule regular medical check-ups.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Avoid excessive alcohol, smoking, and drug use.

  • Wear underwear that doesn’t cause excessive heat in the genital area.

  • Eat a diet rich in antioxidants.

  • Consult a specialist if no pregnancy has been achieved after one year of trying.
