In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Its Advantages

Dr. Juan Arturo Morales Aguirre

Updated: May 24, 2023

What are the main advantages of in vitro fertilization?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most commonly used assisted reproductive technique for infertility treatment today.

Both types of IVF, conventional IVF and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), allow many women to achieve pregnancy even in the presence of severe male or female infertility problems.

IVF offers significant advantages over low-complexity treatments such as artificial insemination (AI), although it may also have some drawbacks.

The IVF treatment involves ovarian stimulation in the woman to obtain a greater number of eggs, which are then fertilized in the laboratory with the partner's or an anonymous donor's sperm, if necessary. IVF is the most widely used fertility treatment by all assisted reproduction centers.

In IVF, eggs are obtained directly from the ovary through follicular puncture. This allows patients with blocked fallopian tubes to undergo this treatment without affecting the success rate.

The same applies to women with tubal ligation and no tubal patency. IVF is the only possible treatment for these sterilized women who regret the decision made in the past.

Furthermore, IVF does not require regular menstrual cycles or spontaneous ovulation since all of this is controlled with hormonal medication.

Embryo Quality

One of the most significant advantages of IVF is the ability to observe the development of embryos from fertilization to day-by-day transfer.

This allows for the assessment of certain parameters related to quality, such as:

  • Number of cells

  • Percentage of fragmentation

  • Symmetry

  • Number of nuclei

  • Others: vacuoles, zona pellucida, cytoplasm, etc.

Based on these assessments, a quality grade is assigned to each embryo in order to select the one with the best chance of implantation.
